What The F*** Is Going On In Pop Music?!?

Apparently she LIKES it rough. Who knew?

Taking a look at this week’s chart-toppers on pop radio, it’s a veritable smorgasbord of  sexed up, foul-mouthed, overproduced crap that is obviously in tune to what sells records. And what would that would be? Sex and potty language apparently. No more need for quality lyrics or a decent hook….just go right for the jugular and give the kiddies what they came for. Here’s the list…

#1. Katy Perry – “ET”
With the lyrics…“Kiss me, kiss me/Infect me with your love/and Fill me with your poison/Take me, take me/Wanna be a victim/Ready for abduction”…it seems this song has nothing to do with the Steven Spielberg classic kiddie movie. Or extraterrestrials.

#2. Rihanna – “S&M”
Seeing as how Rihanna was a recent victim of abuse, it surprises me that she chose to release this title track from her latest album but apparently it doesn’t bother anyone else…including kids who are hearing THIS refrain on the radio…

“‘Cause I may be bad, but I’m perfectly good at it/Sex in the air, I don’t care, I love the smell of it/Sticks and stones may break my bones/But chains and whips excite me

Really? I realize that as a parent it’s my responsibility to watch what my kids listen to but when this song comes on the radio and my teenage neighbor is singing the lyrics it’s embarrassing. Why would anyone think it’s okay for anyone under the age of 18 to hear this song? Does this make me an old fuddy-duddy? Maybe. But seriously music industry? What kind of message is this sending?

#3. Kesha – “Blow”
Even though the double entendre  is in full effect with this song, it’s actually just a dance track. The lyrics are tame compared to Rihanna’s sex-drenched song but Kesha still asks to “see them Hanes.” That I don’t mind so much but still…

#4. Black Eyed Peas – “Just Can’t Get Enough”
Can’t get enough what? Whatever. The BEP are so ridiculous and the lyrics are almost incoherent so anything sexual is kind of lost in the insanity of it all.

#5. Cee Lo Green – “F*** You”
This song was up for a Grammy and although I get the lyrics and what they’re all about, you have to wonder what is going through an 8-year olds’ mind when he hears…

“I guess the change in my pocket wasn’t enough I’m like,’F*** YOU!/And f*** her too.’/I said, ‘If I was richer, I’d still be with ya’ /Ha, now ain’t that some sh*t/And although there’s pain in my chest I still wish you the best/With a…’F*** YOU!'”

Now let me say, I’ve been heartbroken before so I get what the man is sayin’ but still…NOT for a 9-year old once again.

#6. Britney Spears – “Til The World Ends”
This song just sucks. So why anyone would WANT to listen to it is beyond me.

#7. Pink – F***ing Perfect”
Ya know…this song works perfectly well without the F-word and it’s a great song that speaks about inner strength and beauty. Don’t know why Pink chose to use the vulgarity in it but pop radio has done a good job editing it out and no one knows the difference.

#8. Jennifer Lopez – “On The Floor”
Eh. Whatever.

#9. Jeremih – “Put It On Me”
Well…here ya go…*sigh*

“She shaped just like an hour glass/she see how fast an hour passed/time flies when I’m on that ass/but I won’t put our sh*t on blast/work it like a pro pro pro/sit and watch it go go go/do her thing all on the floor/she bounce it fast and shake it slow/so sexual incredible/she beautiful she edible”

These lyrics aren’t exactly catering to the younger crowd either…

#10. Tinie Tempah – “Written In The Stars”

And some other instant classics in the Top 25…Avril Lavigne’s “What The Hell,” Pitbull’s “Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor)” and Mike Posner’s “Bow Chicka Wow Wow” (which is obviously a sex song but it’s at least done creatively).

So there’s some of the Top 25 for the week of April 25th. Sex has always been a selling point for the music industry and I get that, but where artists used to have to be creative about sex and chasing tail, now it’s all in my face. And my kids’ faces. I don’t care much for it. Isn’t there anyone (except for apparently Mark Posner) who is writing creatively about gettin’ busy? And what’s with all the cussing in music these days?

I remember when Nazareth sang about “messin’ with a son of a bitch” and thinking “Oooooohh…someone is gonna get their mouth washed out with soap!” But now? The word “bitch” is the least of my problems. Right Jay Z? I really, really WANT to like pop music but it’s really hard these days when it’s filled with this stuff. I can’t appreciate it. And I think it’s ridiculous that the music industry has let it get to this.

Clean it up…or I won’t be buying any more of your sh*t! Got it, motherf***ers????

Tunes From ITunes_1.18.11 (Welcome To The New Year!)

We’re SO happy to be relevant!!!

Really? Already? Needless to say, I haven’t been on here much and I have been slacking as far as my little music blog here is concerned. Unfortunately, after the holidays, there’s really not a lot to talk about. Most of the good stuff has been released and the music industry goes into it’s long winter slumber. And considering the credit card bill for Christmas has arrived, there’s not much I can afford to buy anyways. But I think I’ve got a few tracks here that can liven up your winter blahs & your credit card blues. Here’s a look at some tuneage that should get your butt shakin’ and your ears quakin’!!! (I coulda been on the radio, doncha know…)

James Blunt – “These Are The Words” (pop)
Blunt has a distinct croon and this power pop song is perfect for the radio. Will it make it to the Top 50? Who knows (or cares) but I like this song. A little more uptempo for him and I like the lyrics.

The Limousines – “Internet Killed The Video Star” (electropop)
Oh come on now…you KNEW eventually this song was gonna have to happen. I just find it amusing that it was a no-name band that finally did it. Who are the Limousines? Well…they’re from San Francisco and they  released an album last year that included the song “Flaskaboozendancingshoes.” Good stuff…and I like the play on the old Buggles song even if this song sounds nothing like THAT historic track.

Toby Keith – “Bullets In The Gun” (country)
Has Toby gone U2 on me? Because THIS track is awesome and sounds like it could be HUGE in concert. LOVE the guitar and the story is classic country. LOVE it!

Edward Maya – “Stereo Love” (electronica)
This song has been stuck in my head and bouncing around for weeks. Seriously…if this song was any catchier you’d have to go to the doctor to get  a prescription.

Cee Lo Green – “Cry Baby” (r&b)
His “FU” song gets all the airplay but this is a gem and I’d LOVE to hear it on pop radio! I expect to see this album winning a bunch of Grammy’s…

Jon Hopkns – “Candles” (instrumental)
Featured in my favorite film of 2011, “Monsters”, this track is subtle and relaxing. And lately I’ve been needing more of that. So I downloaded it…and it’s beautiful.

Cage The Elephant – “Around My Head” (alternative)
A one-hit wonder? Probably not. “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” is a classic but from what I heard of this new album, called “Thank You Happy Birthday,” this Bowling Green, KY band is gonna be around for a long time. This was a freebie on ITunes a couple of weeks ago and I really dig it!

Young The Giant – “My Body” (rock)
With a slow guitar grind, this little rocker builds to a nice boil then assaults you! Another freebie and well worth the price I paid for it but if you didn’t get it, you’re missing out!

Social Distortion – “Machine Gun Blues” & “”California (Hustle & Flow)” (rock)
Classic rockers from a classic rock band. This band has been around since the mid-80’s and there’s a reason why: They are an awesome live act and they know where their money comes from. Tradition rock/blues tracks like these only enhance their already packed greatest hits lineup. Pick up the entire new album called “Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes.” You can’t go wrong.

Ra Ra Riot – “Too Dramatic” (alt-pop)
I’m not sure what drew me into this band or this song but it’s poppy and has a cool backbeat so I kinda dig it!

Duran Duran – “All You Need Is Now” (alt-pop)
Welcome back, D2! This has a weird intro that is typical of this band and I hear the new album is a return to their roots. If this song is any indication, it probably has several tracks that will remind you of their glory days and is a return to “Rio” which is a good thing!

Duran Duran – “Sin Of The City” (alt-pop)
Speaking of Duran Duran, listening to their new single made me wanna listen to some of their older stuff and this track off their 1993 “Wedding Album” is a bonus track that isn’t offered for sale on ITunes. It’s a great track that went unnoticed and if you happen to have that album you should revisit this track. It’s great!

Great Lake Swimmers – “She Comes To Me In Dreams” (alternative)
A tradition 80’s alt-sound that goes down great with a cup of coffee. I imagine I got this one from Starbucks or someplace and I like it!

Cross Canadian Ragweed – “Alabama” (country)
Released in 2004, a close friend of mine turned me onto this song and I love it. Great country rock track and the lyrics speak of a long distance love that burns brightly.

Hedley – “Scream” (pop)
This could be Hanson or any other pop boy band out there but I kinda like this song. Good workout track.

CLASSIC OLDIE OF THE WEEK: Joe Jackson – “I’m The Man”  (alt-rock)
If there ever was a question of Jackson’s influence (or Elvis Costello for that matter), check out this classic track that is a great memory of the way music used to be made. I would love to see him perform this one in concert!  And it’s also a great workout song…

Seriously? This is karaoke at it’s absolute WORST. Apparently this is a band that is made up of actors from your favorite tv shows (not mine) and the proceeds go to charity, but this is TERRIBLE! I listened to a few snippets and my head started to hurt and my knees got weak. Whatever you do…do NOT download any of this drivel. It’s horrible and whoever is responsible for releasing it should be shot. Just send your money to the charity itself and save your ears from the hate.

Tunes From ITunes_The End Of Summer Mix

Summer, it turns me upside down
Summer summer summer
it’s like a merry-go-round

-The Cars

It’s the end. The end of baseball season. The end of days at the pool and at county fairs. The end of cookouts in 100 degree heat. Now it’s time to watch the leaves change, watch some football and hunker down for the big snow. Well…at least that’s what we’ll be doing here in MY part of the world. As for music, I imagine the Katy Perry pop songs will give way to new rock and some songs about heartbreak and headaches. But before we go getting all somber and stuff, let’s check out one more listing of stuff I’ve been downloading that is sure to keep a smile on your face and the sun shining in your heart! (For the record, I have no idea what I’m talking about here. I just made that up and it seemed to work so…I’m going with it…)

Stereoside – “Life Goes On” (rock)
Sounding more like Nickelback than anything else, this standard rocker fits the bill if you need something to crank up! Guaranteed to be on my favorite list this winter…

The Weepies – “How Do you Get High” (pop)
Answering that age old question…this little ditty is classic Weepies. Not too hard but a little more uptempo than what you normally hear from them! I like it!

Los Lobos – “On Main Street” (rock)
It’s like a stroll down…well…down Main Street. Kinda sauntering along, this band has been around for years and it shows on this tune. They know how to take it slow and make it sound fresh!

Robert Plant – “Monkey” (rock…kinda)
Very subtle and eerie, not your typical Plant vocal. He takes us on a low-key ride that is really more about the guitar than the vocal…but it’s still vintage Plant!

Linkin Park – “When They Come For Me” (rock)
You’re not gonna find a better rocker than this one for your workout mix. With a scattered drum and a thunderous encore, this track is HAWT!

Kanye West – “Power” (rap)
Coupled with “When They Come For Me”, you got yourself a strong twosome that have similiar styles. Kanye bounces back from that ridiculous situation with Taylor Swift and he seems to be a little angrier than ever…which is ALWAYS better than a fat cat rapper who has lost his edge.

Ne-Yo – “So Sick” (pop)
Apparently this song has been around for a while but I must have missed it. Reminds me of old school R&B pop of the 80’s. You could cue up just about anything by New Edition and it sounds like this! I dig it!

Maroon 5 – “Never Gonna Leave This Bed” (pop)
It’s my opinion that this pop band was borderline boring until they enlisted mega-hit producer Mutt Lange to amp up the wattage. This track isn’t rockin’ but I love the flow of it and finally the ship seems to be righted for Maroon 5!

My Darkest Days – “Porn Star Dancing” (rock)
I can only imagine this track is gonna be HUGE at strip bars across America! Typical rocker that is straight outta the Nickelback playbook. The added touch is having Ludacris show up and liven it up a bit!

The Ruse – “Down In A Hole” (alternative)
I like the guitar in this one, very subtle yet makes this a little different than the average, plodding alt-pop single. But besides that…it’s really not much.

Cee Lo Green – “Forget You” OR “Fuck You” (R&B)
Depending on the age group that might be in your car, this is a throwback to the 70’s R&B you grew up with…with a little bit of a kick. Might wanna watch the younger ears if you go with the better (and more vulgar) mix, but it’s worth it. Nice track that’s IN YOUR FACE!

Interpol – “Success” (alternative)
Know that plodding alt-band music I was talking about in my intro? Well…this is it. Good track though!

James – “Crazy” (alternative)
Really more pop than alternative, but I remember when this band was a relevant  alternative force. Now they just seem to be bored. Not a great track and I’m a little disappointed that there wasn’t something a little more groundbreaking done.

Bruno Mars – “Liquor Store Blues” (pop)
With a reggae twist, Bruno Mars swings in a different direction from his huge hit “Just The Way You Are” and does something a little different! It’s a good ending to the summer…
