Tunes From ITunes_West Coast Swing

Traveling with a professional baseball team leaves me with a lot of time to listen to a lot of new music and lately I have been a downloading MANIAC! So here are some new tracks that are burning up my earbuds as I travel from city to city. Phoenix, Los Angeles & San Francisco will never be the same…

Anberlin – “Impossible” (rock)
A good summer rock track. Maybe a little too light to be considered “rock”, but pop rock would probably be the best description. It’s light & easy pop rock. There…better?

Usher – “Stranger” (R&B)
I don’t know what to think of Usher these days. On one hand he’s a budding superstar, on the other he’s a mess. I wasn’t impressed with “Raymond vs Raymond” but the deluxe edition includes a few HAWT tracks and I really like this one. Also check out the sexy “Lingerie”!!!

JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys – “If You Let Me” (rock)
Rock out with legendary Chrissie Hynde & JP Jones! Who needs LeBron James when Hynde is a rock legend? Right Akron? This track is awesome!

Katy Perry – “Last Friday Night (TGIF)” & “Teenage Dream” (pop)
Gee…wonder which one will be released first after the post-“California Gurl” phenom dies down? Either way, BOTH are excellent pop tracks. Go get ’em both!

Brad – “Oh My Goodness” (rock)
Love it when this band rocks out on the guitar. With members of Seattle grungers Pearl Jam & Pigeonhed on board, how can they NOT rock?

Black Mountain – “Old Fang” (rock)
Straight from the 70’s, Black Mountain sounds like they hopped in the Tub Machine and zipped back a few decades! Trippy and I’m sure it’ll be HUGE among the college set.

Chris Rea – “The Road To Hell” (blues/rock)
I admit, when I heard this, I thought it was Mark Knopfler. And that is the ultimate compliment! Turns out Rea has been around for some time and this is one of his best known hits. Go check it out, especially if you’re a fan of the steel guitar.

Hans Zimmer – “Time” (instrumental)
Featured in the movie “Inception”, this track is shattering in the way it reaches a pinnacle and then backs off to a soft, soul-searching ending. Love it.

Matthew Dear – “Slowdance” (alternative)
Interesting track. Hard to pinpoint exactly what the influence is but I’ll say it’s a slow rock with electronic edges. I really dig it! Something new & refreshing!

T.I. – “Ya Hear Me” (rap)
Now he’s outta jail and ready to take on all posers. This track is SMOKIN’ HOT! Will definitely be on my Best Of at the end of the year! Crank it up and wind down the windows so you can piss of the neighbors!

Mike Phillips – “Fallin'” (jazz)
Soft sax jazz track with a little vocal help from Natalie Stewart. Easy to listen to and I’m ALWAYS good for a little sweet sax!

Mike Posner – “Bow Chicka Wow Wow” (pop)
The dude who brought us the cool summer smash “Better Than Me” kicks it soul style with this ditty about…uh…gettin’ bizah!!! I predict a hit with this one!

Rehab – “Oh My” (rock)
With a southern tinge and a sweet bassline, Rehab kicks it in gear with this awesome track. If you like bands like Kings Of Leon or MuteMath (which I do), check out this band!

Never Shout Never – “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know” (alt-pop)
This could be a pop hit. Slow love song with a simple composition but effective in its message. I like it!

Ludacris – “Sexting” (rap)
OMG!!! This track is AWESOME!!! Dunno how I missed it, considering Luda’s “Battle Of The Sexes” was released months ago. LMAO! If you like a little humor with your rap, this track is perfect. I HIGHLY recommend this one! Will have you shakin’ your ass all the way to sex addiction class!

Ryan Star – “Breathe” (pop rock)
You’ll probably hear this song on commercials, on television shows and all over the place. Slow and melodic, it’s nothing you haven’t heard before but effective in it’s simplistic pop rock stance.

Trey Songz – “Say Aah” (rap)
Originally released last year, I went searching for a good workout song and I found this little gem. It’ll have you bouncing and shaking your ass all over the place!

Tunes From ITunes_7.22.10

Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless has apparently heard the latest from The Dream…

Wow…when the summer season slams on the brakes, it REALLY slams on the brakes! It’s been a few weeks since my last post because, quite frankly, I haven’t been all that impressed with what’s been coming out. High profile acts like Drake & Sheryl Crow didn’t impress me at all and there have been a few artists who have shown moments of brilliance (M.I.A. & Eminem) and then others who have just plain stunk it up. Here’s the ones that I think are actually pretty damn good…

Eminem feat. Rihanna – “Love The Way You Lie” (rap)
A track about abusive relationships, Em has something to say and he says it loud & clear. Never one to mince words, Shady is at his best here and Rihanna’s vocal makes this an instant classic. Download it now. And you can also get “Talkin’ 2 Myself” while you’re at it ’cause it’s excellent also. And “W.T.P”…just because. Or just download the whole damn thing and save yourself some time.

Free Energy – “Bang Pop” (pop)
A fluffy pop song for the summer that isn’t by Katy Perry? Yep. Dunno who this band is but I like this track!

Francis And The Lights – “Darling, It’s Alright” (alternative)
In the same mold as “The Fray”, this track has just enough energy to keep you bouncing even though the lyrics are sad and well-written. I dig it…but it has to be your frame of mind.

Wild Nothing – “My Angel Lonely” (alternative)
Ahhh…the 80’s. And this band comes off sounding like so many of the mid to late 80’s goth bands that pollute soundtracks today. But I really like this song and I like the fact that Wild Nothing don’t try to hide the fact that they DO sound like Jesus & Mary Chain…and that makes them pretty damn cool!

Maximum Balloon – “Tiger” (fuzz rock)
The guitarist & producer of TV On The Radio, Dave Sitek,  busts his groove out for this funky track. Not anything I haven’t heard from his “other” band, but still pretty damn good!

M.I.A. – “Believer” (alternative)
This track has got all kinds of sex appeal. M.I.A. is hot right now and after listening to and downloading several tracks from her latest release “Maya”, THIS is my favorite. I imagine at some point it will be remixed to a little faster beat, but I like it just like this…slow & sexy. If you like a little noisier and a little faster, also check out “Tequilla” or “Xxxo.” I also purchased “Born Free”, but it’s more punk than it is anything, so if that’s your bag, then you might dig it!  But seriously…M.I.A. is an acquired taste anyways so…proceed with caution!

Ana Tijoux – “1977” (Rap)
It was ITunes’ freebie last week and I didn’t expect much when I got it but I gotta tell you…it’s all in Spanish & it’s HOT! I used it in my spin mix last week and several people commented on it. I gotta go check out more of her stuff but this track is DEFINITELY worth .99!

Jack Johnson – “At Or With Me” (pop)
Maybe it’s just me but I’m not a big fan of Johnson. But a lot of people REALLY like him and I figured I had to get SOMETHING off his new album so here ya go. It’s a little more uptempo for Jack and if you’re a fan, you’ll love it.

Sky Sailing – “A Little Opera Goes A Long Way” (pop)
I dunno…this song is…okay. Look…I know that “Fireflies” was a big hit, but now there seems to be a glut of bands that sound like Owl City. But whatever. I still kind of like this on a summer’s walk with the neighbors waving hello and the sweat dripping down the back of my shirt. It’s summer pop. And that’s cool!

Greg Laswell – “Take Everything” (pop)
I think I’ve mentioned several times how much I like Laswell and this track is another great song by him. Come to think of it, you could probably download all of “Take A Bow” and not be disappointed. Just sayin’…

Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs – “Beg Steal Or Borrow”
I’m sensing a trend here. Another light & easy track. Must have been my mood that night. Anyway, LaMontagne fans are just as rabid as Jack Johnson fans and I’m sure this one won’t disappoint them! I really like it and it has this easy 70’s feel to it. Check it out!

Big Boi – “Daddy Fat Sax” (rap)
This album has been getting all kinds of accolades and I honestly haven’t been in a rap mood lately but THIS track grabbed my ear right away. Big Boi shows why he doesn’t NEED Andre 3000 to lay down a hot track. Very hot!

The Dream – “Panties To The Side” (rap)
Ok…so let’s start out by saying…this is NOT for the kids. But if you’re feelin’ frisky, this is one dope beat with a lot of sexual innuendo and plenty of bravado. The Dream is smoking hot as a producer but here he shows WHY he’s considered such a talent. Doubt this one will get airplay but still…it’s HAWT!!! Go get it now!

Dragonette – “Pick Up The Phone” (alternative)
Another band that wears the 80’s on it’s sleeve, this song reminds me of Missing Persons or Berlin. Very catchy and I’m hoping the soon to be release album is as good as this track!

Stars – “Fixed” (alternative)
I know I’ve heard other bands that sound like this, but for some reason, as I type this, they all escape me. But the familiarity makes this half the reason I like it so much. Then I looked it up and now I see WHY it sounds familiar. All the members are from the band Broken Social Scene. So there ya go.

The Pretty Reckless – “Goin’ Down” (rock)
Sounding a lot like Spinnerette from last year, this band is fronted by Cindy Lou Who. Seriously. Lead singer Taylor Momsen played the little tot that had her tree stolen by the Grinch in the Jim Carrey classic (or not). Needless to say, she ain’t so sweet & innocent in this song. And it’s AWESOME! Love this one!

Macy Gray – “Kissed It” (R&B)
Is there another artist with a voice as unique as Gray out there right now? And apparently she couldn’t get any superstar producer to work with her so she did it on her own and made her latest album “The Sellout” without doing just that. Here she takes a driving beat and thumbs her nose at the naysayers. This track is pretty cool and I like Gray. You go girl!

CLASSIC OLDIE OF THE WEEK: Mel Waiters – “Got My Whiskey” (1997 – Soul)
I got a group of friends that LOVE this song and I hope you love it as much as we do. Mel sings about having a good time,  letting his troubles go and drinking whiskey…of course. It’s old skool soul and it makes me wanna dance everytime I hear it! Go download it right now and tell me Mel ain’t talkin’ the trooth!

Tunes From ITunes: I’m Going To Seattle And All I Got Was This Stupid U2 T-Shirt

So I’m getting ready to take a little trip to my favorite city in the U.S. of A….Seattle, Washington. And in my hand I have 2 tickets to see U2 in concert. Unfortunately, Bono had to go and have surgery so now I’m going to have to wait to see my favorite band in my favorite city. Either way, I’m gonna have a long flight and I’ll have my book and stuff to do, but I also need some good music to take along with me to crank to 12 and annoy the other people in my row. So here are a few new tracks I’ve picked up over the past couple of weeks. And if you’re the one sitting next to me, I apologize in advance but…well…sometimes ya just gotta turn it up!

Attack Attack – “Lonely” (pop/electronic)
Talk about an identity crisis! This band is a mishmosh of music styles. On their latest release, they pogo from tracks like this to screech metal and it’s kind of disorienting. But in a good way. And this track is a cool middle ground. Slow with piano and vocals that soar, I bet this is awesome in concert! But it’s got a weird outro…so be aware.

Against Me! – “Spanish Moss” (alternative)
From The Bravery to this band, there seems to be a lot of bands producing this kind of sound lately. But I totally dug this album when checking it out on ITunes snippets so I hooked myself up with the entire album. It’s pretty damn good! And this song is my favorite. Rocks in all the right places and is great with the windows down!

Plies featuring Tery Songz – “Kitty Kitty” (rap)
Gee…wonder what they’re talkin’ about here? With some sharp lyrics and a catchy beat, Plies follows up “She Got It Made” with this tribute to…uh…felines?

The Goo Goo Dolls – “Home” (rock)
Where in the world did these guys go? It seems like forever since I listened to “A Boy Named Goo” and I really wasn’t planning on listening to this single until I figured I’d give it a shot. And I’m glad I did. Memories from the 90’s came roaring back and if this is the kind of stuff on their soon to be released new album, I’ll be there to get it! THIS is the Goo Goo Dolls I know and I’m glad to hear they’re back!

Devo – “Mind Games” (alt-pop)
Thankfully, this amazing band is still relevant years after they came out with “Whip It” some 20-odd years ago! Their new album is chock full of pop goodness but this was my favorite track of all of them! Go check it!

Nicki Minaj – “Your Love” (rap)
Following in the footsteps of MIA,  Nicki samples Annie Lennox’s “No More I Love You’s” and ends up with a catchy track that should be a hit on pop radio. It’s a bit repetitive, but the beat is infectious and I kinda dig it.

22-20’s – “Latest Heartbreak” (rock)
This song just sounds dirty, like an underground club where I imagine these guys are playing and it’s smoky and sweaty and everyone is jumping up & down and the beat is driving everyone into a frenzy and then…I was in my car cranking this one waaaaaay up.

The Gaslight Anthem – “American Slang” (rock)
This “Freebie Of The Week” is pretty generic by most standards. But it IS free…so I got it. Reminds me of 90’s rock and average 90’s rock at that.

Usher – “OMG” (R&B)
At first listen, I really didn’t like this song at all. But after hearing it on the radio a few times, I can’t deny that it has a catchy vibe to it that I can’t shake. Makes me shake my butt and I swear it’s been in my head for at least 3 days…

The Ready Set – “Spinnin’ (pop)
My daughter is gonna LOVE this song! Straight from the same mold as Owl City, this song is repetitive and poppy and will go great with…well…spinning. A decent workout song which will get old fast with repeated listenings.

Leela James – “Tell Me You Love Me” (Soul)
What  a soulful voice. What a sexy song. This is a return to the glory days of soul music. As a matter of fact, I liked it so much that I downloaded the entire album! If you wanna get your sexy back, go get this entire album and tell me it doesn’t make you wanna do the nasty.

Sarah McLachlan – “Out Of Tune” (pop)
There was a time when everything out of Sarah’s mouth was gold. Since then, she’s kind of become a one-trick pony…soft melodies and breathy vocals that sooth the savage beast. But chicks dig it and when I’m sleepy, I’ll throw on this little tune. It’s nice. Aaaaaand that’s all I got.

MC Chris – “Japanese Maid” (rap)
This rapper for the nerd set is actually pretty entertaining. A friend of mine introduced me to MC Chris and I can’t stop listening to this silly track. It’s X-rated (to some degree) but if you miss when Eminem used to be fun, you’ll LOVE this guy.

Band Of Horses – “On My Way Back Home” (alternative)
I love this song and it is great on those long plane rides where I’m yearning for home and can’t wait to see my family again. Check this one out when you’re in a melancholy mood.

Justin Beiber – “Somebody To Love” (pop)
Are you kidding me? Ths track is SMOKIN’ HOT right now! Just ask my daughter! But wait! There’s actually some truth to that! This IS a great pop song! And if I must say so myself…maybe this kid isn’t all just hype? This one will go great with your workout!

The Like – “Catch Me If you Can” (pop)
With a 50’s throwback sound and a Go-Go’s sense for pop, this is a catchy little ditty that you’ll probably hear on Grey’s Anatomy next season.

Marina & The Diamonds – “Hollywood” (alternative)
Sounding a lot like a cross between Siouxsie & Katie Perry, this is about as 80’s as you can get without traveling back in time to listen to it on your boombox in the middle of the night.

A Silent Film – “You Will Leave A Mark” (alternative)
Speaking of the 80’s, this band sounds like every alt-pop band of the late 80’s. I’m thinking Icehouse maybe? But it’s really GREAT Icehouse! And this track is excellent!

Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris – “Break Your Heart” (pop)
Sure…it’s all OVER the radio right now and you’re probably sick of it but I can guarantee you this…when you think about this summer? You’re gonna be thinking about this song. This is THE hot song right now. And I kinda dig it!

Christina Aguilera – “Lift Me Up” (R&B)

Holy crap I love this woman’s voice. I was a little disappointed when checking out her new album on ITunes. Unfortunately it sounds as if Xtina is back and she’s competing with the Lady Gagag for an audience. But truth be told, Christina was here long before that hack made an appearance and if you were to put them in a singing competition, Christina would kick Gaga’s ass. And this song is a good testament to that. Soaring vocals with a subtle guitar backing her up, this track is as good a bet as any I’ve ever heard. I pick it for Top 40 somewhere towards the fall. Gotta get all the dance crap out now while it’s summertime. And if you are so inclined and don’t wanna buy the ENTIRE album (which I decided not to. Maybe I can get it from DL?), download “WooHoo” (which is possibly the most x-rated song I’ve heard in ages) and “You Lost Me” (which she performed on American Idol earlier this year). Great tracks from a great artist…

Just because…

So now EVERYONE can produce a crappy album with a computer and a microphone. Seriously? This is just AWFUL and it hurt my ears but I listened to every 30 second snippet and it never got any better. Guaranteed to be on a ClearChannel radio station near you very soon…

Tunes From ITunes_Songs From My Cubicle

The Black Keys…oooor Buddy Holly & Kurt Cobain? You decide.

I dunno about you…but I’ve been really busy here lately, working my butt to the bone, trying to make a living. Haven’t had much time to go downloading music really. Oh wait…yes I have! I just haven’t had time to BLOG about it! So here ya go…a LOT of new tunes for your work week…

Greg Laswell – “In Front Of Me” (pop)
Laswell is an under appreciated artist that I tend to drift towards whenever I’m in a melancholy mood. Here he doesn’t disappoint with another classic track that is simple and effective. I just think he has an unusual voice. Something a little different from most artists today.

Sons Of Sylvia – “Love Left To Use” (pop)
These guys sang this song on American Idol at some point and I kinda thought it was pretty good. Then I downloaded it and now I hear it’s just basic pop. But still it’s GOOD “basic pop”. A sing-song chorus reminds me of Bon Jovi.

Stereophonics – “She’s Alright” & “Wonder” (alternative)
LOVE these songs! Great for cruising or your workout and they both have a great beat. This band is almost too hip for it’s bad self…

M.I.A. – “URAQT” (rap)
This older track is cool for one basic reason: M.I.A. samples the “Sanford & Sons” theme song. Seriously. And it’s AWESOME! LOL

Minus The Bear – “The Thief” (alternative)
Funky track that has a sweet bassline and  will have you bobbin’ your head and tappin’ your fingers.

Ratt – “Don’t Let Go” (hair metal)
And here I thought these guys had disappeared. Turns out they were just hiding under that rock over there, waiting to peak out and bite ya! This track is a return to form for the 80’s hair metal staples.

The Hold Steady – “The Smidge” (rock)
So I bought the album by one of the best live bands you’ll ever see and it hasn’t disappointed me yet (I haven’t gotten through the whole thing yet. Gotta find some time…). This track is load in all the right places with Craig Finn’s gravely vocals. With this band, you gotta listen to the lyrics to get why they’re so unique…

Alpha Rev – “When Did I Wake Up?” (alternative)
I’m thinking this could have been a country song…but it’s not. Nice alt-pop track that is easy to listen to and works great in the background. Not a glowing recommendation, I know, but not every song needs to be in my face for me to enjoy it!

Game featuring Justin Timberlake – “Ain’t No Doubt About It” (pop/rap)
Anything with JT is gonna sell and this track is SMOKIN’ HOT. Buy it now and see for yourself. Any song that includes a reference to the swine flu and makes it sound cool is worth your $1.39.

Delta Spirit – “Bushwick Blues” (rock)
Where has THIS band been hiding? This single is awesome! Apparently they had an album out in 2008 that I totally missed. Well now they have a new album ready to drop and if this song is any indication, they could be this year’s Kings Of Leon. Great song…go get it.

N.E.R.D. featuring Nelly Furtado – “Hot-n-Fun” (pop/rap)
A good workout track but nothing to get too excited about. It’s kind of repetitive but the funky bassline is cool and Nelly sounds great!

LCD Soundsystem – “Drunk Girls” (alternative)
This could have been a song off the latest Violent Femmes album. Quirky and jumpy and I love the lyrics! A great college tune!

Erik Hassle – “Hurtful”(pop)
The ITunes Freebie this week is a nice track. Guaranteed to be played on Top 40 radio within the next 3 weeks. Go get it while it’s free! And if you are liking this track, I also downloaded (not for free though) “”Wanna Be Loved”. I honestly like it better than the freebie. This guy should be huge for Top 40. Let’s wait and see what happens…

Sleigh Bells – “Infinity Guitars” (alternative)
I call it alternative but I’m not sure what this is. It’s got guitars and cheerleaders and a driving beat and handclaps. It’s a hot mess and it’s a thrillride! Go check it out and see what you think!

Plants & Animals – “The Mama Papa” (alternative)
This is a MUST HAVE! Great song with an old school alternative feel. Just new enough and yet familiar. Can’t place who they remind me of though. Will have to keep listening…

Jamie Lidell – “Completely Exposed” (blues rock)
This is a fascinating song and one of my favorite downloads this year! Lidell has a unique voice and this track is chock full of unique qualities. I can’t even discribe it. It bounces from slow to fast to middle of the road. Go get it now!

Crash Test Dummies – “And It’s Beautiful” (pop)
Remember “Mmmmm Mmmmmm Mmmmm” from back in the 90’s? Oooor do you just want to forget you ever heard it? Well…the CTD are back and this is a great song! Yes…the baritone voice of Brad Roberts can be a little much, but it works wonderfully with this song. I think you’ll like it.

Avenged Sevenfold – “Nightmare” (metal)
A new track from a band that I don’t normally listen too but this one intrugued me and with the death of Ronnie James Dio, I was in a headbanger mood. A cross between Metallica and…um…Guns N Roses? Whatever…it rocks if you like this sort of thing!

The Black Keys – “Next Girl” (alternative blues rock)
With a funky beat and a howl, the Keys are a force to be taken seriously. This track is a sweet combo of alt/rock/blues and it thumps along at a solid pace. Dan Auerbach’s vocals are solid as usual and his guitar work is blues at its best.

The Soft Pack – “C’Mon” (alternative)
A fun song with not a lot of weight. It ain’t heavy and it reminds me of The Virgins from a couple of years ago. It’s got a retro vibe to it and I dig it!

Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull – “I Like It” (pop)
Uh…this one sucks. He rips off “Telephone” by Lady Gaga almost note for note and then it the refrain steals from Lionel Ritchie? A 5th grader could have written this because the lyrics are so awful. But I imagine this one will be on Top 40 radio any day now also…

Crystal Bowersox – “Midnight Train To Georgia”
Lee DeWyze – “The Boxer”
Crystal & Lee – “Falling Slowly”

Of all the songs performed on Idol this year, these 2 artists are the only ones who have made their performances sound different & unique. These 3 tracks are a little of what we can look forward to when they get into a studio for the first time. I know I’m looking forward to it!

Annnnd that’s it. Hope you got your credit card handy….

Tunes From ITunes_The Final Four Edition

It’s been a crazy March Madness and every team I was rooting for was knocked off in the regional semifinals. So to console myself, I went and downloaded a boatload of new music to make myself feel better. So guess who gets to reap the benefits of my splurging? You…of course! Anyway…here’s the hottest new music that I could find. Not all of them are 3-point buzzer beaters, but they sure make me smile when Ohio State & Kentucky are getting knocked off and my brackets are in flames…

Angels & Airwaves – “Shove” (alt-rock)
The first tune I throw on here isn’t even ON ITunes. Because I got it for free of the Angels & Airwaves website. They released their album “Love” for free on their website and this track is excellent!! I was a big fan before, but this entire album is chock full of excellent arena rock. Go get it while it’s free!

Snow Patrol – “Just Say Yes” (easy alternative)
I’ve been hearing this track on the radio (whenever they aren’t playing the same 4 Lady Gaga songs) and I really like it! And if you haven’t heard it on Top 40 radio yet, I’m pretty sure you can catch it on “Grey’s Anatomy” right…about…now…

Usher – “Hey Daddy” (R&B)
Ok…so the first time I heard this song was on Good Morning America and Usher was serenading 4 8-year old girls with his scantily-clad dancers shaking their asses. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that I enjoyed the song. It’s not his strongest single, but it’ll do.

Dum Dum Girls – “Everybody”s Out” (Rock)
With a fuzzy vocal that reminds me of  The Ravonettes, this band is a lot of fun. Almost makes me wanna get the Brill Cream, throw on my leather jacket and head down to the sock hop.

Melissa Auf der Maur – “Out Of Our Minds” (Rock)
It’s a slinky, sexy crawl of a song and it burns slowly. Think  female version of Jim Morrison. And you KNOW that’s kinda cool…

Young Money & Lloyd – “Bedrock” (Rap)
Yeah…it’s been out for a while. But I still kind of dig it. Only problem is…it’s way too long. Cut this baby down to 3:30 and it’s a classic. As it is, it’s still got an irresistable hook.

Paper Tongues – “Love Like You” (Rock)
Reminds me of Remy Zero a little. The lyrics of this track will appear to all the ladies out there. Also the song “Trinity” is the freebie of the week this week. Can’t go wrong there either…

Broken Bells – “The Mall & Misery” (Alternative)
This track will definitely be on my “Best Of” list next year. The guitar is what makes it special but this song steals a little from Lindsay Buckingham. And I like that. I plan on reviewing the entire album soon, but you can do worst than to download this track right now!

Plies – “She Got It Made” (Rap)
Stealing a hook from “Pina Colada Song”, you would think this would be hysterical, but really it’s a pretty good track! And it’s all about the love…and da money.

Slash – “By The Sword” (Rock)
I am totally looking forward to Slash’s entire album release. I really dig this song (even if it DOES sound like the White Stripes) and Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale wailing vocal just soars. Can’t wait to see what he does with other guest vocalists…

Outasight – Just buy the entire “Further” EP
It’s 6 tracks of awesomeness! I love every track from “Catch Me If You Can” having a slick, drawl and a thumping bass to “Better Late Than Never”, which SHOULD be a big hit. Download the whole thing. You won’t be sorry.

The Bird & The Bee – “Heard It On The Radio” (Pop)
ALthough the rest of the album is dedicated to Hall & Oates covers (???), this track is light and bouncy. I imagine it could be a hit if it’s released in the summertime. But probably not…

Mishka & Willie Nelson – “Homegrown” (Raggae)
I’m gonna give you 3 guesses what this song is about. Need help? Hmmmm…let’s see…it’s illegal, it’s sometimes grown out in the backyard carefully hidden and it’ll make you very happy. And with an appearance by Willie, ya GOTTA know it’s about the marijuana. It’s a hip little tune…perfect for those moments when you are partaking in…uh…in a cold beer?

The Watson Twins – “Modern Man” (Alternative)
What a sweet refrain and the voices are sent from heavan. Very easy to listen too and is cool like the flip side of the pillow. Oh yeah…I stole that. But it IS like that!

Kelis – “Acapella” (Dance)
Kelis returns after a long layoff (her last single “Milkshake” was released way back in 2003) and this song is standard dance track stuff.  But I kinda like her AND her voice and it will go great in a workout mix. Dunno if she is leaning more towards electronica, but this really doesn’t have a trace of R&B in it…

Holiday Shores – “Phones Don’t Feud” (Alternative)
This Los Angeles band has a strong buzz happening right now so I went to check them out. Not bad but I can’t say that it’s anything I consider special. It seems there are a lot of bands out right now doing similiar stuff. However they might be the greatest live band ever! I dunno. And this track IS kinda cool…

Beyonce – “Videophone” (Pop)
My speakers pretty much fog up everytime I play this track. So smoky & sexy, it makes my face turn red. Apparently there is a newer version with Lady Gaga making an appearance. For whatever reason, Beyonce & Gaga have teamed up for their 2 telephone songs. And ya know what…it works. This song is killer.

CLASSIC OLDIE OF THE WEEK: Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose – “Treat Her Like A Lady”
Making an appearance on American Idol this week, rocker Lee took this and made it sounds modern and I HAD to go revisit it. With classic tracks like “Too Late To Turn Back Now” & “Bog Time Lover”, the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose are as smooth as R&B gets. This is an amazing classic that everyoe should know. If you’ve never heard it…go download it now!

Tunes From ITunes_3.11.10

They’re back and trippier than ever!

It’s time for March Madness! And I have been downloading tunes like the Mad Hatter, looking for all the cool new stuff that I can share with yinz guys (not from Pittsburgh…but I got friends who live there). Anyway…I’ve downloaded a few albums (one being Florence + The Machine. Read review HERE) and quite a few singles so let’s get to it!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Bad Blood” (rock)
Almost sounding like Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, frontman Peter Hayes does his best as this song grinds with “Jesus & Mary Chain” authority.

The Blue Van – “There Goes My Love” (alternative)
Poppy and catchy as hell, this track will be eating up time during my stops at the local gym. Excellent workout track!

Jamie Cullum – “We Run Things” (pop)
Funky like Jason Mraz yet with his own style, this jazz influenced, multi-instrumentalist has himself a catchy ditty here!

The Temper Trap – Science Of Fear” (alternative)
This is an excellent album and even though “Sweet Disposition” gets all the attention, this track is awesome! I need to do a review of “Conditions”. Remind me to do that soon…mmmmkay?

Kidz In The Hall – “Jukebox” (rap)
This is ITune’s freebie of the week. I thought it was Kanye West, but it’s not. Instead it’s 2 buddies from Penn University who hook us up with a cool dance number. Unfortunately, the rest of the album isn’t as good but this track is definitely worth the FREE price!

The Dirty Heads – “Hip Hop Misfits” (rap)
Coming across as Beastie Boys wannabe’s, this rap/reggae band is kind of screwy in that their album is a mish-mosh of the 2 genres. Personally, I like their rap stuff best, and this is the best of them all!

Frightened Rabbit – “Nothing Like You” (alternative)
With their last release, “The Midnight Organ Fight”, this Scottish band came roaring at me. Their latest release is just as good and this song kicks some serious butt! I love it and it will probably be one of my favorites of this year…

Barenaked Ladies – “Every Subway Car” (pop)
Um…what is going on here? This track comes across as very serious and I don’t know if I love it, but I definitely like it. It’s just not what I expected. But I’d buy BNL doing barnyard noises anyway so…

Gorillaz – “Superfast Jellyfish” (???)
I’m not even sure what to call this…it’s poppy with rap and De La Soul has collaborated  on this track so I bought it. It’s “trip hop” at it’s best!

Isles & Glaciers – “Empty Sighs & Wine” (alternative)
This has got some mad crazy beats going on all wrapped around an interesting rock track. I totally dig it and I went looking and apparently Isles & Glaciers is a supergroup with members from the bands that I know nothing about. Needless to say, this track rocks. As for the other bands? Who knows? Go check out Wikipedia and see if YOU have ever heard of them…

CLASSIC OLDIE OF THE WEEK: Digital Underground – “Kiss You Back” (rap)
I’m in an old skool rap mood with spring right around the corner and this track is hip and fun. Humpty Hump ramps up the silliness and this track WILL get stuck in your head. Just a warning…

Tunes From ITunes_2.25.10

Welcome! This is the first appearance of Tunes From ITunes here on “Music Makes The World Go Round”. If I might say so, this category was HUGE on my OTHER site and so I figured, with the shear amount of downloading that I do, I might as well share with whoever else might be reading this. You will get a sense of my taste in music and my buying habits. Normally I buy about a CD a month with the rest being singles. ITunes IS my choice of purchase however I still head out to Best Buy on occasion to buy the latest & the greatest. Anyway, enough with the blabbering, let’s get to it. I always suggest heading over to ITunes and sampling these tracks first. You never know what I might be in the mood for and then you end up with Celtic thrash or something ridiculous like that…

Dommin – “My Heart, Your Hands” (rock)
This is the ITunes freebie of the week. Not a bad track and the entire album, “Love Is Gone”, sounds pretty good! I also downloaded (not for free) “Tonight” and I might just end up getting the entire thing. The lead singer, Kristofer Dommin, has a unique, Morrissey-ish voice and the tracks all sound pretty cool. This is an excellent track to begin with!

Jaicko – “Fast Forward” (Top 40)
I heard this track on Top 40 radio and had to have it. Good pop with a good beat and fun to listen to! Not gonna break any new ground but still catchy as hell and worth the price. Oooor you can just listen for it on your pop music station of choice…

Cypress Hill (feat. Tom Morello) – “Rise Up” (Alternative Rock)
This song kicks ass! With Morello rocking the guitar, it definitely has a Rage sound to it…and I’m all good with that.

Toni Braxton – “Hands Tied” (R&B)
Check out THIS track from the woman who has the prettiest purr in the business. This song just exudes sexiness and Braxton’s husky vocals just make me swoon.

Gogol Bordello – “Ultimate” (Ummm…dunno)
A friend of mine recommended this band and it’s different and interesting. Kind of gypsy-dance music from New York, although much of the band is immigrants from Eastern Europe (according to Wikipedia). I hear they have an incredible live show. Anyway…this is definitely eclectic!

The Broken Bells – “The High Road” (alternative)
What do you get when you mix The Shins & Gnarls Barkley? Well…apparently The Broken Bells.  And what a great combo it turns out to be! With Danger Mouse and Shins lead singer James Mercer, this track from the upcoming release is hopefully an ear of things to come. Excellent music here folks!

Janelle Monae – “Tightrope” (Dance/R&B)
Oh yeah…now THIS is funky! Why is it this woman can’t get on the radio? Seriously, all you Gaga fans out there, Janelle is where the music is. This track is excellent and her other release, “Cold War”, is pretty damn good also. Looking forward to her new album coming out here at some point!

The 69 Eyes – “Hunger” (goth rock)
With their odd vampire fascination and a rockin’ 80’s guitar, this song is straight from the movie “The Lost Boys”. I love this album and this track is the highlight! Love it and it’s the slowest song on the disk.

Rihanna – “Photographs” (R&B)
After seeing Rihanna in concert, my opinion of her has changed. Now I think she is as talented as any pop songstress out there. This song should get some airplay eventually. You can bet on it!

Tiesto (feat. Tegan & Sara) – “Feel It In My Bones” (electronica)
What a great track. Makes me wanna dance around and shake my ass. Having T&S doing techno is a GENIUS! Makes this song stand out in a long line of average tunes in this realm.

Nneka – “The Uncomfortable Truth” (Soul)
What an amazing voice! Love this new artist. I also downloaded “Kangpe”. Both are excellent!

CLASSIC OLDIE OF THE WEEK:  Sisters Of Mercy – “Lucretia My Reflection”
Because I’ve been in THAT kind of mood, I went back and listened to this awesome track from one of the bands that was known to influence bans such as The 69 Eyes. This track just grabs hold of me and won’t let me go. And clocking in at just under 9 minutes, you get a great, long track for a buck!
